Evolving In Pursuit

We have many authorities that have been placed in our lives: our bosses, parents, professors, and, policemen. But who is it that you look to for approval; who is it you find yourself trying to emulate? It is essential that your authority figure be God. He is the only one capable of fulfilling such a daunting role. It is easy to find yourself comparing yourself to seemingly perfect people on the internet. These celebrities and Youtubers seem like they have got it all figured out. But they are far from genuinely perfect and cannot sustain the authoritarian role in your heart which will eventually leave you empty and lonely. God is the only one who is truly perfect. When you try to model your life after other people you become less and less of how God created you. But when you strive to become more like God you become more and more of who God created you to be. He tries to keep us focused on ourselves. He wants us to try to solve everything by ourselves. If he can keep everything "in house" he can effectively prevent us from experiencing the life changing truths freely available through Jesus. This truth has manifested itself even within religion. We are taught to be "good Christians", to look good. We should attend church in our Sunday best as if God cares if you are keeping up with the latest clothing trends. We are taught to fix things within our hearts which does not sound like a bad thing, but we have the order wrong. We are taught to get our heart right, clean ourselves up, and fix everything that is wrong or sinful in our lives before we can receive from God.
