We have many authorities that have been placed in our lives: our bosses, parents, professors, and, policemen. But who is it that you look to for approval; who is it you find yourself trying to emulate? It is essential that your authority figure be God. He is the only one capable of fulfilling such a daunting role.
It is easy to find yourself comparing yourself to seemingly perfect people on the internet. These celebrities and Youtubers seem like they have got it all figured out. But they are far from genuinely perfect and cannot sustain the authoritarian role in your heart which will eventually leave you empty and lonely. God is the only one who is truly perfect. When you try to model your life after other people you become less and less of how God created you. But when you strive to become more like God you become more and more of who God created you to be.
Personally, I find it easy to allow my teachers to define my worth. I struggle to place my identity in God rather than academics. This week, I allowed one of my teachers to degrade my self-worth. He expressed a lower opinion of my abilities in his class than I had previously held. It was challenging for me to recover from and I can not say it was with a lack of tears. I was reminded, however, that his opinion of me does not matter. God made me and he says I am perfect no matter what other people may tell me. I can not let others continue to define my value when God says I am priceless.
Everyone has someone that they allow to define their worth. It may be your boyfriend or older sibling or your parents. Whoever it is for you, let me encourage you with this: Although they may be someone who you look to for guidance, their word is not the ultimate authority. God's words created the whole earth from nothing, it calmed the raging sea, it cast out demons, and it rose men from the grave. The same God whose word holds infinite power says you are perfectly and wonderfully made. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar and a fake. Do not give them any power over you. When you find yourself believing the lies that people tell you, turn to God's Word, in which, you will find the ultimate truth.
